Ban’thalos Tamed

Took two tries. 1st try was with slow fall cloak. He ended up moon-firing me to death as I waited for him to be in tame range. 2nd try I did the top of the tree method. This worked much better, and I no wonder it is the preferred method of taming him. Well he’s mine, and has been added to my SB collection.

MoP Beta Invite!

Mists of Pandaria Beta Invites

Blizzard announced the Mists of Pandaria Beta will be starting soon. They also explained how invitations will go out to Annual Pass holders. It looks like I have a very good shot at getting in early.

Blizzard PosterBlizzard on Mists of Pandaria™ Beta Opt-in and FAQ (Source)

We’re inviting Annual Pass holders in waves over the course of the beta test, and will be ramping up the number of invites we send as quickly as possible. We’ll be inviting Annual Pass holders based on several factors, including how long your World of Warcraft account has been active and when you signed up for the Annual Pass.

That is great news for me. Not only is the Beta starting soon, but they are picking people based on “time in game” (since early 2006), and “annual pass purchase date” (signed up on first day). I am proud to say this is my 4th beta I’ve done with Blizzard. Although I am a casual gamer, I am extremely devoted to this franchise. I am excited to see the new expansion.

Things to do in the MoP Beta:

  • Experience the Pandarian starting area
  • Check out changes to Hunter Talent trees
  • Run new dungeons as they are available
  • Explore, explore, explore

This is going to be a ton of fun, and hopefully I can bring some useful information back to these blogs along the way.

Bohumil Reached Level 30

Early 20s was quite easy, and Bohumil coasted through them. Once in Stonetalon Mountains, things got a little more interesting. First I was jumped by 6 mobs while questing in a cave. My kiting skills saved my life, and kept me in this challenge. Next while moving a balloon, I had to fight 3 mobs in melee combat. Again escaped by the narrowest of margins. Melee spells are now on my action bar just incase that happens again.

Bohumil has reached level 30, and is continuing his journey in Stonetalon Mountains. Only two more levels until he has Feign Death, and when deaths matter its nice to have an aggro reset spell in your pocket.

Bohumil Reached Level 20

Just reached level 20, by doing quests. None of that grinding “safe” mobs stuff for this tough dwarf. We’re throwing ourselves (although with caution) into the adventure of questing.

Following the rules, I’ve sold a ton of common and rare items to vendors. On WrA (Wyrmrest Accord realm) the price for low level BoE items is crazy. I’ve sold a bunch of items for a number of gold. What does a dwarf with only 1 life to live do with all that coin? Go Shopping!

Bohumil has purchased the entire [Tanned Leather] armor group. He traveled all the way back to Ironforge, to purchase both a [Large Bore Blunderbuss] and [Battle Axe].

Things are going extremely well with the challenge. I’ve had no close calls, and suffered minor damage. My pet has not died either, which is a testament to my skill as a hunter. The challenge rolls on, and my boots stay on my feet.

Iron Man Challenger

I was intrigued by Blizzard’s blog post, Till Death Do You Part, regarding leveling a character “Iron Man Style.” After reading the post and poking around the forums I thought this was a great idea. This was a natural fit for the hunter class, and a worthy challenge.

Meet my first Iron Man Challenge character Bohumil, and his cat “Spotz.” Seen above flexing his muscles in Darkshore, just after successfully reaching level 12.

As a hunter, we are perfectly designed to take on such a challenge. We are ranged DPS class, which keeps enemies at a distance. We are able to feign death, to cheat actual death. Our pets easily tank our targets, preventing us from taking much damage. We can heal our pets during combat, prolonging their life. Our traps can be used, in an emergency, to control targets. We can track enemies, which can prevent unexpected combat.

What scares me is simply dying to stupidity (e.g. falling or fatigue) or worse disconnect issues (e.g. in combat or while flying). Regardless how hard I try, those factors are mostly out of my control. I personally feel they are more likely the cause of Bohumil’s demise.

I highly recommend everyone tests their hunter skills and give the Iron Man Challenge a shot. Do you have what it takes?

Patch 4.3: 5-man quick boss guide

Patch 4.3 drops today. YEAH! For those of us not currently RAIDing Firelands, we have a bit of gear upgrades to do. To get you there, you will need to spend a few days in the three new 5-man heroic dungeons.

To help you quickly get up to speed wowinsider put to get this great article to get your going.

Pro Tip: Create macros for each boss, from the short guide. Assign to party chat “/P” and you will be able to quickly get lazy party members up to speed.

/P “Echo of Sylvanas Stay out of purple stuff on the ground. When phase 2 comes, kill the ghoul everyone’s DPSing and then run over its corpse and away from Sylvanas.”

WOW vs SWOTOR

This weekend I was fortunate enough to get into the SWOTOR beta test. Being a life long Star Wars fan, I decided this was one game I must try. I researched classes and races, and decided to go Jedi Knight. After playing the story line for 3 days, while waiting for patch 4.3 to drop, I decided I should write about my first impressions, as a WOW player.

Things I like better than WOW:

  • Choose your own adventure dialog when interacting with quest givers.
  • Each quest is a cut scene which includes the toon you created.
  • Quests are a big part of the story line. Unlike the random (collect firewood, kill x type quests in WOW).
  • Companions are cool and you are introduced to them through the story

Things I think WOW does better:

  • Cool fancy quest delivery, while cool the first time through, will get old when attempting to re-roll an alt character (unless I choose something other than Jedi).
  • Character movement feels stiff in SWOTOR. Lacks the speed and fluidness of WOW. This is also how targets and others players appear. Very choppy and unrealistic.
  • Combat is laggy. Press an attach and there is a noticeable delay before your toon performs the attack. This surely will have an impact in later levels.
  • Mobs are difficult to see. Most mobs in the Jedi starting area are too difficult to see, causing you to “run into” targets instead of stalking and killing them.
  • The look of a WOW character looks cooler as you change equipment. I must have changed a ton of armor and weapons and hardly saw a difference to my character.
  • Interface is easier on the eyes and more colorful. SWOTOR uses the typical neon blue from the movies for all of the do-hickies on the screen. Because it all looks the same, I found my self hunting and pecking too much for the information I wanted.
  • Quest givers are difficult to find. WOW’s bright yellow “!” is fantastic. The “<>” like symbol is difficult to see. I simply ran around and if I saw a group of players with the [...] balloon over their heads I knew a quest giver was there.
  • Many WOW quests have a bit of humor and integrated pop culture. While this doesn’t stick to the serious side of Warcraft, it provides fun little experiences that make questing fun.

So will SWOTOR take over as the MMORPG of choice with me? After spending a weekend with the game, I am very interested in the storyline. But no more than if I was reading the story instead of playing. The game play is unpolished and lags far behind World of Warcraft. I do not see SWOTOR as the WOW killer it was claimed. And with Patch 4.3 due out in a few short days, many WOW players will be back to take advantage of all the new features in the game.

Diablo 3 on My Mind

I’ve been quietly following Diablo 3 news as it is released. I didn’t win a D3 beta key, so there wasn’t much point in thinking too hard about it. However, after purchasing my Annual Pass, I started thinking about playing my free copy of Diablo 3 (when available). That’s when I started reflected on my past in Diablo and Diablo 2.

Diablo and I go way back. I’ve always been drawn to ranged classes, go figure I’m a hunter. In Diablo I played a bow wielding Rogue. Diablo 2, I gravitated toward playing an Amazon. In all cases, leveraging my ranged weapon skills/spells is what made the game so much fun. This feeling continues to this day.

So I re-watched the class trailers and started reading about the different classes. Guess which one drew me in…

I’d like to introduce you to my Diablo 3 character… Darkranger the Demon Hunter.
